Facilitators’ guides

These workbooks were created to accompany the publications from Art for a Child’s Safe American (ArtSafe) and Children Writing for Children, Inc., that were written and illustrated by incarcerated youth. A Caged Bird was a publication of female youthful offenders who were incarcerated in the adult women’s penitentiary in Ohio. InSide Looking Out was written and illustrated by young men incarcerated in one of Ohio’s adult penitentiaries for men.

Facilitators’ guides were designed for youth-serving organizations to use the writings and illustrations of incarcerated youth in their at-risk and intervention programs.

The guides are structured much like teachers’ editions of textbooks. Activities and suggestions for discussion surround each reprinted page of the original publication. The activities, projects, and discussion topics are also all tagged with the specific social-emotional and intellectual skills targeted; in addition, they are coded with language arts and visual art curriculum standards.

I created all activities, performed all research, wrote the entire contents, and designed and created the final published version of these books.
